STINKY SCHOFIELD this month's braveheart

Tuesday 15th August, 2006

This month’s braveheart award goes to Stinky Schofield.
Stinky is a seven year old cat and he was brought to Runnymede on the 21st of July after a road traffic accident.

When Stinky came to us it was obvious that he was in a lot of pain and he had poorly back legs!

The veterinary surgeons decided to take x-rays of his back legs to find out what was causing him so much pain
The x-rays showed that Stinky had dislocated his right hock joint (the equivalent of a human ankle), and with manipulation the vets discovered he had ruptured hock ligaments on both of his hind legs.

He needed an operation to repair his dislocated right hock, so an external fixator was placed on his leg; this is a framework of pins that would hold Stinky’s bones in place whilst he was healing.

The surgery went well, and Stinky recovered from his anaesthetic. He was given strong painkilling drugs to take away any discomfort that he might have after the operation.

Stinky’s left leg was placed in a splint and this would have to stay on for four to six weeks. The splint provides support for his leg and gives the ligaments time to heal.

He was eating well and a few days later he was able to put weight on his back legs, the veterinary surgeons thought that he was well enough to go home!

Stinky went home after a week in hospital. He had to be kept in a voyager which is like a big dog cage to restrict his movement allowing his injuries time to heal.
Stinky will still come to Runnymede for regular check-ups and all the staff are always happy to see how he is recovering!

Stinky is this month’s braveheart because no matter how much pain he had been in, he was nice natured to all the staff, he enjoyed being groomed and loved nothing more then a big cuddle from us!
