Heart Awareness Month –April 2009
Heart disease in dogs and cats is one of the biggest problems we see in middle aged and older pets. Signs can be obvious such as exercise intolerance, coughing and weight loss or more subtle like a ‘murmer’ and only picked up at routine health check.
Recent advances in diagnosis and treatment of heart disease in dogs and cats can give our pets considerably longer survival times than previously possible.
The key to this increased life expectancy is picking the problem up before it’s at an advanced stage. We can generally do this by taking a thorough history on your pet and assessing their ‘cardiovascular system’ i.e. listening to your pets heart and lungs, feeling pulses and checking gum colour.
Here at Runnymede we are running a Heart Awareness Month to raise awareness of this common condition and extending an invitation to the hospital to have your pets heart checked free of charge any time in April.
If your pet is not currently on any heart medication or hasn’t had a routine check up (e.g. booster) in the past 6 months please call to make an appointment this April.
